“A Map and a Prayer” – The Adventure Chronicles of Brightblade – Part 1 (A Dungeons and Dragons Solo Roleplay)

Happy Sif’s Day!

Lief Crispen leaned forward to study the map on the table. His mother hovered over his shoulder looking down at the parchment which showed a route from the city to a cave in the hills to the east.

“What do you think mother? Is it genuine?”. Lief’s strong voice came.

Anna Crispen frowned as she studied the details. The map was recent as the ink looked fresh and not faded. The landmarks were current as well. It was well done but not ornate. A practical map to mark a place of importance for later.

“I think so, son. But will it deliver on what it promises?”

Anna’s voice was sweet and melodic but quivered slightly because she knew what her son was planning.

Lief leaned back slightly and looked over his shoulder toward her.

“The merchant seemed to think so. He was most grateful for the work we did repairing the shoes of his caravan. This is the bonus, the trick is collecting.”

“Well son, we can’t afford to hire someone. We are cobblers, not rich merchants.”

Lief sighed, “You know what has to be done, and to be truthful, you know this is the break we have been looking for. It might give us the wealth we need to start buying favor and expanding the business.”

“We have a good life.”

“No doubt, but still water stagnates. The family name needs security and that means the need for wealth and title.”

This was an old conversation between the two of them. She was about to say ‘ and it needs heirs, but she knew what the counter would be. Lief would simply point out that there would be a greater motive for him to find a wife and produce children if there was something to inherit beyond what they have. She knew he was in part right that he needed to use the days of his youth to build something and then settle down. ‘Marriage is a young man’s burden and an old man’s comfort’ was the wisdom of the gods.

She looked at her son. He was so much like her dead husband now. Tall, strong, and athletic, but in many ways beyond him. But he had her wisdom just like he had her fair skin, green eyes, and long dark raven hair. Lief was truly the best of his parents. But he was also all she had anymore. Her only child. This was the real cause of her fear.

“Mother, I know you worry over me. I get your fears, but if the Crispen name is going to stand the test of time they need security and position. I think this treasure might be the key, or at least the start. I can’t do what we need to do by just fixing shoes. It’s noble and good hard work, but it’s not going to be enough.”

Anna nodded. Adventuring was not uncommon and the hills and forests around the City of Brightblade had their wild side to be sure. If this map marked a treasure it could tilt their fortunes for the better. It might attract good blood to the family.

“Mother. I will be careful. I have been training with the militia for the last four years and I am doing well enough to have been promoted to corporal. I have good equipment and what we think is a good map. If I am reading the map right, it’s about half a day’s walk from here.”

“Be careful son,” tears came to her eyes.

Lief stood and hugged his mother in his crushing grip.

“I will say a prayer to Sensua for you tomorrow.”

“Thank you, mother. And I will wear her amulet to remind me that you are praying for me. With any luck, I won’t be more than a few days.”

“Let’s pray not. I love you, son.”

“I love you too, mother.”

_

The next day Leif arose and got ready for his trip. He put on his militia armor consisting of his chainmail tunic, leather boots, and arm grieves over his under tunic. He then placed his traveling tunic over everything and tied it with his leather belt. He had a backpack with everything he needed from torches to rations. He tied his longsword to his belt and then picked up his spear and shield, a medium-sized round shield with a steel front and oak as its core. Pulling the traveling cloak’s hood over his head, he walked toward the door to leave the shop.

Anna stood by watching her son and made sure she didn’t cry until after he left. He did that with few words. He handed her his amulet of Sensua and she slipped it over his neck. She kissed him on the cheek and watched him step out into the quiet morning streets of their neighborhood. He disappeared around the corner looking back toward her one last time. Only then did the tears come, but she did not sob. A few minutes later, she had collected herself. Put the closed sign on the shop and headed to the Temple of Sensua.

The Temple was a few city blocks away and this early in the morning the traffic was light as was the line to see the priests and priestesses. The temple itself was probably 100 yards square. It consisted of the front altar reached by passing the entry arch, the two houses of love to the right and left and then the rest of the complex was behind all this where the priests, priestesses, paladins, and other members of the temple lived. Anna concerned herself only with the altar today and she felt a surge of hope as she crossed through the archway. The Motto: ‘Life, Love, and Fertility” she had seen a thousand times. Today they meant a little more as she thought of the life of her son, her love for him, and her hope of a continued family.

She approached the altar. Sensua’s statue standing over it. Sensua, the goddess of life, love, and fertility was always depicted as a pleasantly curvy woman with long hair. And always naked. In this case, she stood with her legs shoulder width apart facing the archway and her hands outstretched above her.

“Daughter Anna, you seem distressed.”

The priestess was one she had met before. A short but curvy woman with light brown hair. She was pleasant to look at even wearing her robes of white.

“I am. My son is doing something important for the family and it is potentially dangerous. I have come to seek the goddesses’ blessing for him.”

“Say no more.”

Anna handed the priestess some gold coins and knelt. The priestess’ prayer was simple and to the point but Anna felt its strength and smiled. The ritual continued with Anna offering a prayer for her son. At this point, she pledged herself again to the goddess. Once finished the priestess beckoned her to rise and then motioned toward the house of love on the right. Anna nodded and then walked with purpose toward the house of love and passed through its door.

In order for the ritual to be completed, the rights of love must be performed. In truth, this part had more than a single function for Anna. He husband had been dead for almost as long as Lief had been out of her womb. She had forgone remarriage to focus on raising her son. She still had needs as a young woman. It was no accident that her devotion to Sensua was regular and a few times a week. She was in her mid-thirties having had Leif when very young.

Each house of love was arranged pretty much the same. The lowest floor was a waiting area where the novices waited on those waiting to complete their ritual. It was white marble like most of the temple and the benches and a couple fountains were made of the same. The novices were all male. In the other house of love, they were female. Not that it was absolutely expected that women went to the house of men and vice versa. She had a girlfriend who went to the female house. Sensua was not about the judgment of one’s sexual tastes, but she is about the expression of passion leading to life.

One of the novices handed her a small cup of wine and she drank it while waiting. The two floors above her were where the bed chambers were. This early in the morning she would not have to wait long. She recalled how each house was organized. Novices trained here on the first floor. They made sure that the people waiting were comfortable. One had to be at least an acolyte or adept to actually provide the conclusion to the ritual of love. Acolytes did the most meeting with and concluding the ritual with each petitioner of the goddess. Adepts ran the place and kept things organized.

There was much training involved in this and one of the main things is that the clerics of Sensua were considered some of the best healers in the world. That healing power came in large part from their very hands-on understanding of the body, sexual energy, and touch magic. Nor were they limited to just humans although that was the majority in Brightblade. They also boosted elves, dwarves, halflings, and gnomes as clerics. She thought Lief had said a dwarf female was one of the adepts in the female house of love and she had seen an elf here a couple times who was an acolyte.

Anna smiled as she remembered when Lief had matured to the point she had brought him here. She had caught him pleasuring himself and she knew it was time for some proper education. The Acolytes and Adepts were all too happy to speak to him and she was so thankful for that with his father dead. When he turned fourteen, he came of age and she brought him here for the first time for him to do the ritual himself. A female acolyte (according to her son a pleasant human woman) took his virginity and he became a man. He joined the guild and the militia that same year. Since then she had known nothing but pride in her son. This adventure in truth made her even more proud. He was thinking of things larger than himself. He was thinking long-term for the future of the family.

“Anna”

Anna looked up to it was one of the Novices. A fine looking ebony-skinned young man.

“”Yes”

“Follow me.”

Anna followed him up to the second floor. He directed her to wait in the first room on the right. The decor of all these rooms was simple but comfortable with dark wood furniture, red curtains, red bedding, silver chamberpots, washbasins, and pitchers. She walked in and stood.

“Someone will be with you shortly.”

A few moments later the door opened and an Adept walked in closing the door behind him. He was a medium-sized man with olive skin. Anna raised an eyebrow as she knew only one Adept was on duty in each house at any time. Mostly to coordinate the Acolytes to the right rooms. The fact that an Adept…

“I can see the questioning on your face. The priestess thinks very highly of you and could see your need. So I have been asked to complete the ritual with you in hopes of securing Sensua’s blessing for your son. It is hoped that the extra measures we provide will do so.”

Anna nodded and thanked him and the temple for their special consideration. He nodded in return and then pulled his red robes back from his shoulders and let them fall to the floor revealing his muscled naked form. Anna glanced down and smiled. He approached her and his fingers touched her cheek. Instantly she could feel the magic of the ritual as it melted her worry and tiredness. One by one her pieces of clothing became a pile on the floor.

_

Sometime later, Anna was laying on her back in the bed and the adept had gone. Her worry for her son had lifted and her naked athletic body quivered with divine magic. She always felt so alive at this moment and it is perhaps one of the reasons she visited the temple so often. The adept knew his business better than most. He had even offered to cuddle with her afterward if she so desired. She told him ‘thank you’, but she needed solace with the goddess. The adept had nodded, put his robe back on, and left. Left alone with her thoughts, she realized that she was still young enough to bear a child, and with her son now old enough to be on his own, this was, perhaps, the time to remarry.

It was at this moment that light began to grow in the room. Anna sat up and looked with amazement as dots of light began to form into shape in front of her until she saw it was a woman’s form but indistinct.

“Anna Crispen, Anna my faithful follower. I have heard your prayer. I will watch over your son. He will return to you. In return, my temple may ask something of him, encourage him to cooperate and all will be well. Be blessed, my faithful daughter.”

The image began to fade.

“Wait! Goddess, I have a question. A question for myself.”

The image brightened and solidified again.

“Ask your question.”

“Thank you. Will I ever know love again?”

“Yes. But not in the way you think. I will also answer the question unasked – yes, you will bear another child with another man. But it is Lief who will bless me the most. Your other child will belong to another deity. She will not serve me”

“I see. Thank you once again for your patience with your servant.”

The image faded and disappeared.

Anna smiled – love, a child – a girl, and Lief safe. She breathed deeply. Now there was nothing for it but to wait.

Writer’s Notes:

I am sorry for the delay on this series, but I got sick this week and have not felt like much of anything all week. I also have to face the reality that I was going about this all wrong by trying to top down the world design for this series. I have turned it around and designed one character (literally redoing my fighter a third time) a single setting idea and then went forward. The basic idea is that the world will fill in of its own accord as each new character is added and when things need to be answered.

Ultimately this is the roleplaying part of the solo adventure I am doing. I basically am going to play the game and jot things down in the journal. That’s why things won’t always be predictable even for me. I will then take this and turn it into a story for the roleplay part. I will be introducing a new character from time to time and things will grow as I am able.

A few other things:

  1. This series is very adult in its content. I don’t recommend it for kids. I honestly think the Dungeons and Dragons world suffers from a sterility problem in this regard. Expect genuine adult situations, horror, sexual situations, incest, nudity, and violence. If you watched Game of Thrones, nothing will surprise you here. What might be interesting is that multiple races invite some interesting situations. This series will not shy away from rape and murder nor will it be ‘woke’. I want a realistic portrayal and not everyone in the world has ‘modern’ sensibilities.
  2. Part of this is I want to realistically portray the nature of ancient religions and cosmology. It is interesting that Dungeons and Dragons’ mythos centers on creation as an act of war, whereas most pagan myths view it as an act of sexual creation. People in pagan thought tend to look at the world around them and reason to the divine. “My mom and dad had sex and here I am. Where did the universe come from? Two gods had sex and here it is.” For me, proper myth has creative acts in life be creative in myth and destructive acts are destructive.
  3. It should be noted that my world thus views sex in a much more positive and less taboo light. In fact, it is the more evil deities that will encourage celibacy and the destruction of life through things like forbidding sexual expression.
  4. Character Development: Lief Crispen was developed with as many random tables as I could use. I also randomized many elements of his creation to get what I got. This actually will be pretty true for most of the characters you will see. The goal is for me to challenge myself in writing creatively. How do these things go together? How does this background fit the class? etc. Today, I tried to get a basic background for the character presented but chose to do it through his mother. In addition, one of the random background things was the character got a treasure map as a boon. It launched the idea of what happened today. Most characters will be created randomly like this but I will try not to repeat a class and/or subclass until all classes are used.
  5. Character Death: Death is going to happen. I am not going to protect these characters with one exception, the last character standing alive gets protected to keep continuity between the characters in a single story arch, In this case, this centers on Adventures by people from the City of Brightblade.
  6. Adventure Development: I am using The Solo Adventurer’s Toolbox Parts 1 and 2 once I get passed these first couple of adventures. For the adventure that is coming and the second one will actually be based on solo adventures from the 1983 Basic Set: You know the one with the cover below. If you played them you are familiar, but I will be adding my own twists. After that, it will be pretty random.

One final note. I will be writing on only this series for a while. I recently realized I am trying to do too many projects. So this is the only thing I will be doing for at least a year. My goal is to get my creativity flowing again and then see what I can do later. I loved D&D as a kid and teen and now I am feeling that growing again and just want to enjoy it. Basically for those that follow my life. It’s Living life, My YouTube Channel, and this series for a year or so.

Serial Character Idea – Noble Fighter

Happy Thor’s Day!

For my serial on this blog, I have been following up on my idea of using Dungeons and Dragons with a solo system. I want to start with one character and have them work alone for a bit and then add other characters as the serial moves on. The choice of the first character is critical. I need the central catalyst character to be pivotal for the story and for the party’s cohesion. The idea I have had is a fighter but with an interesting backstory and position where adventuring would be something he needs to do. A fighter with a noble background seems the most likely. Fighters have a bad rap of being uninteresting to play you can overcome that by making their character interesting in other ways. In this case, I am creating the source of the party’s adventures. More details are forthcoming.

I still am debating on the name of the serial. I should have more time to work on this once my own place is solidified. I will have a lot more time when the basics of living are in place and more routine.

It should be noted this serial will be very adult for a lot of reasons. This is not written for YA but more for a mature audience. Call it a reaction to my fundamentalist prudish upbringing.

To-Do List: 2-1-23:

  1. World Building for my fantasy serial is more done but I need it put in the same
  2. Diet Plan – Need to get serious about the low salt and carb diet I need going into Spring – with my own pace this should be easier. – I am going with more of the idea of being carb-low and limiting salt intake. I am also looking at focusing on cooking things better as an area of personal growth.

To-Do List 2-2-23:

  1. The apartment is finalized – need to move in over the weekend if possible but when you are single time is all your own.
  2. List of things for the apartment I will need.

My Serial Idea – Returning to My Dungeons & Dragons Roots.

Happy Sif’s Day!

In writing a new serial I was struck by the need to do two things: 1) I want to create and develop new characters and have a sort of revolving cast to try new character ideas, and 2) To have a system of randomness that forces me to explore things that I would not usually explore. Enter an old friend in gaming – Dungeons and Dragons.

There are so many things to do in D&D these days compared to where we used to be when I was first introduced to the game in the early 80s. Back then we were using the 2nd edition with its iconic covers. I found myself fighting a solo campaign with a friend because the two of us were the only two people who liked to play at the time. W didn’t have the internet so meeting personally was the only way to play and few people back then wanted to join because D&D was ‘evil’ according to the preachers. I have discovered that, for mysterious reasons, anything that young people enjoy that becomes popular quickly becomes evil if it takes away from devotion to the church and said, preachers. They don’t like competition.

Over the years, after that, I had mixed results with playing with groups and in some senses shelved my involvement in the game because it was so hard to get a group together. Fast forward to a few years ago and with the internet, it is now completely possible to be part of a group every week that is scattered across the globe. I have regained my interest in Dungeons and Dragons and fifth Edition, while more basic than 3.5 has my interest because it is what everyone plays right now.

But there is also another reason, the materials available are so widespread now and most notably there are so many solo systems out there. It’s not that I don’t want to also play with a group on one of the platforms for doing so, it’s the writing possibilities with a solo play that intrigues me right now. Mostly the idea I can create characters and have random things happen, like real life, and those characters have to deal with them. It provides a writer’s wet dream in a sense when sometimes you get a block. Using this – I roll the dice and deal with it.

My plan is to create a party of one character, play for a little while then add another character and keep going for a while and maybe add another one or two characters. The choices here will be based on what is best for the story. I will even kill characters if I feel that it’s needed for the story. At the same time, I am going to be playing a game I enjoy for inspiration. I am not sure when this will full on begin, but I am ordering a solo system soon and the main thing, for now, is to design a good first character. A class that can survive on its own fairly well. That’s all for now, but I would be interested in what you think.

To-Do List 1-27-23:

  1. Work on the fantasy serial for the blog. – you can see the results today of what I worked on.
  2. Relax – need this as switching shifts has taken a lot out of me today. – done.

To-Do List 1-28-23:

  1. Visit to see my possible new apartment.
  2. Generate novel ideas – brainstorm
  3. List for YouTube Channel construction.

“Epilogue” – Space Tramp – Chapter 22 (Megatraveller Fan Fiction)

Happy Mani’s Day!

Writer’s Thoughts:

This episode of Space Tramp is a little different in that the story part is at the end.  I wanted to first take some time to reflect on the project which was to do a fully fleshed out background story based on the advanced character generation system of Megatraveller the Role Playing Game.  The idea is simple in that you roll the dice for each year of character development and then come up with a story to give greater detail on how those things happened.

I must say it had its challenges in the fact that a lot of time very little as far as excitement happened. Route and No Business assignments required a little imagination to give them a story element that was entertaining.  Real-life is sometimes dull but that does not mean insignificant things happen.  So too with the life of Jeremiah Kilwood.  The real surprise is that there was little in the way of danger most of the time for Jeremiah and he faced the challenges of advancement easily.  I had no problems and there were actually no rerolls along the way.  The only one time I had a survival issue I used a BP to overcome it, but that made for an interesting story of how survival is not just about the physical but could also be legal, in this case, avoiding prison.

From a gamer point of view as someone who loves Megatraveler.  I would play Jeremiah with a lot of pride and he is a deep character now with a background full of many stories that could come up. His skills are diverse so there are few situations that he would be caught off guard in or unprepared to meet the challenges to himself.  He has space skills, business skills, interpersonal skills, and combat skills. A well-balanced character.

The project comes to a close now. I have enjoyed it but it is time to move on to other things. The one thing I will take with great joy is that Jeremiah’s personality is believable. He is not perfect, but practical. He has had obstacles placed in front of him and overcomes them so he is confident.  He is a bit of a carouser both in the sense of drink and the pleasures of women, but he can respect women at the same time. He above all values his freedom and has worked hard to gain his own.

For the future, Jeremiah could use a bit of leadership skill and perhaps ship’s tactics to complete the Captain role but he is going to have to gain that through adventuring.

Story:

Jeremiah stood on the bridge of his ship and looked out seeing the dock berth his ship was in.  He put his hand on the pilot seat reflecting on how many times he had sat in a chair like this.  His mind raced to think of how many things he had learned as a pilot, navigator including some skill in operating ship’s sensors. His time in space had made him a capable spacehand.  He knew enough about engineering to work on his own jump and maneuver drives. He could man turret weapons in a pinch and was capable of handling a vacc suit in Zero-G no problem. No one would question his skills as a spacer.

He turned and left the bridge, passing through the crew common area, he walked by the staterooms for the crew and his own captain’s quarters. Much of what was required of being a Captain was learning to be a diplomat, administrator, space lawyer, trader, and a broker. All of which he knew something.  The business side he knew very well, but he also knew how to have a drink with a client or his crew as well as when to talk the language of dockworkers and the organized criminal element wherever he went.

He went through the airlock which was currently open for the purpose of loading passengers and went down the gangplank to the hangar floor.  He reflected at some of his other skills which he hoped to never use.  To bash in a skull with his bare fist or to body check them, to shot them with his handgun or pull his blade and slice at them were all skills he knew. He could even do all that in Zero-G. That plus his natural strength meant people often saw him and moved aside.

He moved out to the front of his ship and looked at the last thing that had just been finished – the nose art.  After much deliberation, he had decided on the name of the craft and after checking the registries found that no one had actually named their ship what he wanted. He was surprised, but then again he was connecting an idea with a system.

The nose art had come out well, better than expected. The artist had painted a naked woman straddling a silver rocket. She was a curvy, lightly muscled lass, with larger than normal breasts and bright red hair that was flying behind her.  He had actually asked Anabelle to model and surprisingly she said ‘yes’.  Although when she saw the finished work she remarked – “my breasts are not that big,”.

See the source image

Jeremiah smiled and knew, but didn’t share, that this alteration, which he asked of the artist, was drawn from an old picture of Kate Stuvak’s chest. The woman created as nose art was beautiful, sexy, (and because it was modeled mostly on Anabelle’s body), slightly muscled, and strong as well.  Under it was was the name of the Ship in blue letters with white trim – “The Regina Space Tramp”.  He supposed it and the art was a mosaic of sorts of all the women in his life up to that point.  It was a good name – little naughty but with a heart of gold.

Whatever the future brought, he knew this ship would be a part of it and he wouldn’t have it any other way. Maybe now if he found the right woman who: 1) was a spacer herself and 2) would love his ship as much as him, then just perhaps love was in the cards at last. He could only hope.  He turned and walked out of the hanger.  Time to find a crew and set a destination.  Once that was done, it would be time to take on some passengers and cargo and start making money.

Time prepare for the first voyage of The Space Tramp.

Final Word:

I have enjoyed the story and if you have read the whole thing – thank you.

“Mustering Out” – Space Tramp – Chapter 21 (Megatraveller Fan Fiction)

Happy Sif’s Day!

Just a reminder this will be a week of fiction instead of the normal posts. Enjoy your holiday presents readers.

Story:

As Jeremiah Kilwood walked into hanger bay C-225 of the Regina Starport, he had an odd but wonderful feeling as the Starship that resided there came into view.  It was a Type A Free Trader – Beowulf Class. It was a little worn as it was used, but it was painted blue and white which were his two favorite colors. What made it more wonderful than the colors was the fact that unlike any other ship he had served on – it belonged to him.  His own starship was at last in his possession.

This last year had been frightfull dull.  He had been part of the Countess’ crew for another charter assignment.  He found himself taking small jumps but returning to Regina three times. This he used to his advantage as he had to finalize several things.  Firstly it allowed him to monitor his investments nad grow his cash flow which he needed to make some of the final purchase decisions involving the starship.

This was largely possible because he found an old vessel The Beowulf style of Type A Free Trader had been in service for well over a hundred years. This one was forty years old, but thanks to a connection with Captian Juros, she was able to assess that the maintenance and repairs would be minimal and not very expensive as well.  Just time-consuming.  For the repairs, the Countess herself put a crew on it as a returned favor for his years of service. She even topped off the fuel tanks.

During this time Jeremiah also continued his education and graduated university with a full bachelor’s degree in business.  He smiled as he had completed what the Countess had started those years ago. He gazed with pride at his wall in the Captian’s cabin at the degree.

Finally, his investment work had paid off as he had effectively more than doubled his bonus money. He had enough now to get started with cargo and crew.  He could even afford to buy his weapons and a few other niceties for his cabin.  He was prepared financially to get going.

Mostly was the feeling that he no longer was working for anyone but himself. The risk was his and his alone.  But so was any reward.  The only thing left was to name the ship. There were, of course, many women that had crossed his path that were worthy and he went through them in his mind.

Captain Juros would be mortified.  Kimberly Forrest was an old memory from his first year when he made 4th Officer.  She was married and he didn’t know her new name or if her husband had taken hers. He had heard she had two kids and had moved up the bureaucratic ladder in some other agency.  There were also the course of girls from The Naked Gypsy – Cherry Rose, Madam Anabelle, Mirana, Sarah, and many others whose names he had forgotten.

Kate Stuvak had been his roommate aboard a ship for an entire year, but after that, he lost track of her for a few years until he saw she had opened up a medical practice in Regina and had gotten married.  No, it wouldn’t due to have another man’s wife’s name on the front of your ship.  Although from the waist down she might make great nose art. Without her clothes on of course.

Of course, Countess Borgosman would not agree to have herself scantily clad on the front of his ship or even to use her name.  No, he was probably going to have to make something up but a good name for a ship was important.  She was an old ship but from all his observations still in great shape.  A sound and beautiful ship.  Also curvy, sexy and experienced.

He sighed and headed to his retirement party which he had been informed of well in advance.  The Naked Gypsy was decked out for it and he smiled as he was greeted by old friends, most notably Captain Juros and Countess Borgosman. The Countess coming to a place like the Naked Gypsy spoke truly of how much she honored him. He thanked her very much for coming.  The festivities were well attended by everyone in the area.  Jeremiah had made a reputation for himself as a Captain and many respected him.  Not bad for a Space Tramp from Strouden.

Once the party was over, Madam Anabelle took him to her room and among all the benefits he had received, she told him he was always welcome in her bed.  Half price too. He thanked himself that he had spent some time staying in shape this last term.  His health was good, his pension in place, a starship in the hanger and nearly a quarter-million credits in cash in his bank account. Good shape indeed.

Now if he could just come up with a name for his ship.

“Recovery Missions” – Space Tramp – Chapter 20 (Megatraveller Fan Fiction)

Happy Frigg and Freya’s Day!

Stories:

When Jeremiah rounded the corner and The Naked Gypsy came into view, his heart was never so glad.  This year’s last assignment had been one he would not want to repeat any time soon. He had absolutely every intention of working the whole thing out of his system with several strong drinks and Anabelle’s warm embrace for the evening.

The Countess chartered his services for the year again but this time there was little change, in retrospect, of earning anything as far as a bonus.  What it did earn him was a lot of clout with the countess which he had every intention of cashing when he mustered out.  This assignment had better have earned at least that for how close he came on a couple of occasions to dying and the trouble.

It sounded simple enough.  There were several derelict vessels scattered across several systems that belonged to a now-defunct company that used to be based on Regina.  The Countess said this company was connected to her parents but she wouldn;t say how. Rather she chartered Jeremiah and his crew to pilot her own Subsidized Merchant ship to find them and then retrieve all data and possible information on what happened to all the ships.

In total, they found three ships.  All of them had been abandoned in places one might say were difficult to find unless you were specifically looking for them.  After finding ways to bypass their security systems, it was vacc suits and zero-G until they could fire up some power and activate the grav plates so they could walk around.

What they discovered is anyone’s guess but the Countess seemed very excited every time they brought aboard some stuff.  Jeremiah had to admit he did learn something this year.  How to pick open locks and open safes.  He got good at it even though he never had to look over his shoulder when he was doing it. But it was worth it as he often recovered sealed documents and sealed memory storage devices.  There were a few valuables but nothing major and each ship had an empty cargo hold.

The close call came with the second ship which was parked in an asteroid field and he had to use all his piloting skills to get close enough to connect to it.  They were almost hit by asteroids twice despite his solid maneuvering. Once they connected he used the ship’s turrets to blow some of the closest asteroids to bits and then they entered the ship. That ship looked like some fighting had taken place and they airlock was broken open so vacc suits all the way.  In retrospect, they had survived barely and Jeremiah was happy the third ship was much more friendly.

The countess thanked all of them and then told them to standby as she might have a contract for next year.  Jeremiah sighed.  He only had one year to go until he planned to muster out, so he took a deep breath and hoped that she wouldn’t try to get them killed this next year. He felt there was something shady about this last year, but he had done his job and nearly was space splatter a couple times while doing it.

Right now though he switched gears – time to find some people to drink with and then he planned on having Anabelle earn her money, perhaps even work a little overtime.  He just knew he was happy to be alive and ground side. Although that itch of boarding a ship and taking off to the stars would probably never leave him. One more year and his guild service would be complete. Independence was his goal and he was almost there.

“Trader” – Space Tramp – Chapter 19 (Megatraveller Fan Fiction)

Happy Thor’s Day!

Just a reminder this will be a week of fiction instead of the normal posts. Enjoy your holiday presents readers.

Stories:

The Countess’ instructions this year were pretty specific as she wanted Jeremiah to take the ship and trade along the trade routes previously created between the planets and systems in which her fiefs were established. It was a fancy way of saying that she wanted Jeremiah to be engaged in a Route assignment.  Jeremiah did this and there had been no real instance of him needing to say he had a close call or near-death experience.

What he really found himself doing was pushing his trader skills to try to make as much profit as possible.  he had the Countess’ permission to use some fo the hold space for his own personal trading and he pushed this to the limit as well. The one thing that did grow for certain was his bank account over this last year in regard to gain the significant money he needed for a starship of his own.  In addition, the Countess had put a percentage bonus on the profit of the voyage and he got that as well.

After the return trip to Regina on the last leg of the journey, he smiled as he looked at his bank account. Close now, He could feel it and with only two years to go in his last term, he was now more relaxed as a captain. His crew was very stable as people wanted to be on his crew and he didn’t have to do too much firing and firing.

The one thing he found was he had extra time that he quickly put to good use by taking some courses from Regina University which he would log every port of call.  When he got back the university called and told him he had the equivalent to a second-year student.  he actually felt a surge of pride about this. he had considered university when he was 18 but knew the odds of getting in were slim so he just hitched a ride on the first Free Trader.   Now he was considering the idea of a business degree to give him some more professional clout.

Not that it mattered as far as his social status.  His societal status hadn’t changed much but his time as a Captian of a merchant’s vessel had given. His respect came from his actual abilities not his actual standing in society.  Other than the Countess, the upper crust always looked down on him a little and the middle class just shrugged about it.

Well, being a little lower on the social scale had its perks. Most notably no one gave him even a sideways glance when he would walk into The Naked Gypsy have a little to drink and hire one of the ladies for the evening. There were still certain vices his low social standing allowed him to engage and no one gave a shit.  He wasn’t sure this would ever change and he was glad it would not. Giving up the warm embrace of a lovely willing lady at the end of a long year was something he didn’t want to happen at all.

“Senior Captain” – Space Tramp – Chapter 18 (Megatraveller Fan Fiction)

Happy Tyr’s Day!

Just a reminder this will be a week of fiction instead of the normal posts. Enjoy your holiday presents readers.

Stories:

Jeremiah sat at a table and was longing for the moment that this whole oral examination process was over.  He had been drilled all day long by Senior Captians in the Free Trader Guild and quite frankly he was getting tired and all he wanted at the moment was a stiff drink and a warm willing woman.  The Naked Gypsy was calling to him, no mistake.  As he reveled in these thoughts the door open once again and female Senior Captain who he had never seen before came in and sat down across from him. She smiled.

‘Congratulations Captian Kilwood, you can now claim the rank of Senior Captain.  Welcome aboard.”

She handed him his new insignia which was basically a circle of five pips with another pip in the center.  It was the highest rank in the Free Traders. He had done it the fastest anyone can and a feeling of pride filled his heart.  Not bad for a poor orphan boy from Strouden.

This was a great way to end a fairly interesting year.  Not a dangerous one but technically challenging.  The Countess had him basically shuttling her across the Spinward Marches conducting various points of business and even though they did keep the ship operating at times; there were other times she simply didn’t want the hassle so they just traveled with no cargo or passengers.

The real issue was the fact they spent a lot of time in a spaceport and in low orbit so repairs and such were done in vacc suits and for the first time, Jeremiah could say he learned how to handle one a little better.

During this time he worked on learning how to be his own broker for transactions so he could save on commissions for transactions as a Trader.  He still turned a tidy profit despite the Countess’s not always running for-profit stance for the voyage. He had still personally put money aside for his starship by at times acting as a Broker for others in their transactions.

Promoted he stood and shook his fellow Senior Captian’s hand and then exited the Free Trader headquarters on Regina.  He started the short walk to The Naked Gypsy.  When he arrived he was greeted by old friends, Several Captians he had served including Captian Juros who simply beamed with pride. Even the Countess was there looking awkward in a place that was a little less high society than she was used to.  The party was pretty grand for the Gypsy and the free drinks, at the expense of the Senior Captains, flowed.

After several hours the crowd started to die down until he found himself with a few close friends and then once they left, he headed upstairs to the brothel part of The Gypsy. He discovered with not too much surprise that his fee had been paid for the evening and Anabelle the Madam herself was his for the evening.  She smiled at him and took him by the hand leading him to her room.  During their evening’s activities, she told him she was now available to him whenever he wished. A service provided for Senior Captains along with a discounted fee for the other girls. he was already enjoying the perks of his new rank and it made him smile.

He now faced the task of finishing up his fifth and probably the last term of service.  Three years to go and he would muster out, claim a ship and go into business for himself. It was his last goal and he could now see it coming to pass.

“Relentless Time” – Space Tramp – Chapter 17 (Megatraveller Fan Fiction)

Happy Mani’s Day! Just a reminder this will be a week of fiction instead of the normal posts. Enjoy your holiday presents readers.

Story:

As he laid in Sarah’s arms he began to realize that for the first time he felt the creep of age.  She couldn’t be more than 20 years old but she was one of the most popular girls according to her profile on The Naked Gypsy’s roster.  Curious, Jeremiah had paid the extra fee for the ‘last call’ with her and found the experience more than enjoyable.  For someone so young, she definitely had some serious horizontal skills. It was just the fact she was so much younger than her that bothered him a little.

His age had really bothered him this year in retrospect,  He had noticed a small decline in reaction speed and dexterity and so he took to training on it using the pilot simulator, handgun practice as well as a little brawling and small blade work. That said in the end, it took a lot of work to maintain his reflexes and gain nothing at all.  He felt the same, but the fact is he should have been more for all the training he did, but nope- just the same.

This year he would have described as a wonderfully profitable and boring speculative trade route.  The Countess asked him to find more markets for her good being produced by her fiefs and he went and obliged her to the point she was very pleased.  Full bonus and it was the only part of the trip that wasn’t dull.  He couldn’t;t complain though as it gave him time to keep his body maintained and do some extra reading.  He was starting to gain the reputation of being a reliable Captain.

He credited a lot of that to the fact he would look at a person’s record before hiring them and looked for patterns of good solid work and knowledge.  He rarely took on a rookie as part of his crew but he would remember that Captain Juros would on occasion take on tramps like himself had been and he would take a chance on a youngster from time to time.

Sarah’s arms were wrapped around his neck and her body felt good against his. it wasn’t so long ago that he was that age, becoming a spacer for the first time.  As he looked at the future he knew this next term would probably be his last for the Free Trader service. He just wanted the base retirement and the opportunity to be his own shipowner.  He still needed a little more money.  But his own investments in many of the trades he had done was providing a lot of Megacredits toward that end.

He smiled.  It wouldn’t be long now.  For the moment though he turned his attention back to Sarah.  There was still one activity that made him feel young as when he had first joined and he had paid the extra fee for a lot of Sarah’s time. Time to get his money’s worth.

“Profitable” – Space Tramp – Chapter 16 (Megatraveller Fan Ficiton)

Happy Sif’s Day!

Story:

Jeremiah looked at his personal device and the balance his investment account now had was much more to his liking.  25000 Credits was a big haul for an extra bonus but the trade route into exploratory territory had opened up some new markets for both his ship and the Countess. She had kept him on as promised as her captain and he had been working hard to open up new trade routes involving her holdings.  The results had been spectacular so he and his crew all pocketed some serious extra change.

This was good as Jeremiah was still investing a lot of his extra money and everything else he could save into getting his own vessel.  This meant a pretty spartan existence but he managed quite well.  If he kept it up and played his connections right, he might just achieve his dream. At least it seemed far more tangible than before.

He had had to learn how to ‘box ears’ this voyage though.  On a couple of occasions, the monthly time spent in some port often resulted in a brawl and he would have to break it up.  He had a tough as nails crew and the places they were going were frontier in feeling.  It was important that he and the crew did not look weak and they pulled it off with the local dockworkers and a few other crews.

The Countess herself was very pleased and the profitability of several of her fiefs just increased by quite a dramatic margin. She was certain that she would keep Jeremiah on as captain of her ship another year as she credited his trader skills. Jeremiah was beginning to see how his relationship would lead to his own starship sp he smiled and said thanks. He kept his gear in the captain’s cabin and headed to The Naked Gypsy. He, after all, and an annual tradition to keep with a glass of rum and a pretty girl of his choosing.
