On the Road

Happy Thor’s Day!

I am on the road right now traveling to see my family. I want to keep my streak going so I want to write this ahead of time. It will drop on Thursday.

I do have some thoughts about travel. I guess in my old age I am starting to hate driving myself somewhere. I like going places and part of my goal this summer is to get my Passport renewed what I don’t like is the monotony of driving on American highways. I think there is something to be said for the old days where Highways were about the trip as much as the destination. It seems to be more about the destinations these days. If that is the case, I would rather leave the driving or flying to someone else.

In my next post, I will be in a new location.

I remain.

The Rabyd Skald – Wandering Soul, Bard, and Philosopher.  The Grey Wayfarer.

  1. Highways were never about the trip; they’re about the getting there with the least possible razz-ma-tazz. When I drove from Maryland to Oklahoma in the weeks post-9/11 for Sonny Son’s BCT graduation at Ft. Sill, I found it actually amusing. You cross the stunning Appalachians of Maryland into the Ohio Valley, and it’s as though you entered a film loop: every mile looked exactly like the last. Indiana and Illinois were a bit meh from 70, as well. But after spending the night in St. Louis, Missouri cutting south was so hilarious. I call it The Land of Big Things because visible from Rt 4 were buildings with big cows, big rocking chairs, big hats, big boots. And then Oklahoma–goodness! Stretches of interminable straightness punctuated by the rare 20-foot rise. But the “Drive Nice” signs were as amusing as the “Don’t Drive Through Smoke” signs were cryptic. I’m actually planning a road trip along the Great Wagon Road (now Rt 11) to follow my ancestors (Hail!) from the dock in PA to southwest Virginia. Check out “Blue Highways” by William Least Heat-Moon or “Lost Continent” by Bill Bryson,,,on your next flight. *teehee*
I actually just wrote about travel, as well: https://playingfromthecoda.wordpress.com/2022/05/29/tis-the-season/
