Nine Noble Virtues – “Nine to Three to One”

Happy Odin’s Day!

When I first started this blog I would talk about the Nine Noble Virtues (NNV) and then talk about the three higher vitrues of Love, Justice and Wisdom. I still beleive in these higher virtues I will jsut talk about to them less becasue as I have tried ot live my life by the NNV I now recognize that these higher virtues simply are more and more just a result of living the NNV. It’s simply a matter of growth.

This has led me to seeing that all virtues in the NNV form the threefold cord of Justice, Love and Wisdom. These three virtues form the Noble Life. This is the one goal – a life that is lived in nobility of character and humanity. The Nine form the Three and the three twist into the life that is lived in nobility. A Noble Life is the ultimate goal of the NNV.

The big thing for me as why I follow this philosophy is that anyone can do this. Wealth or skill or experience does not matter. What matters is that one pursue virtues to get to the noble life lived. Nine to three to one.

Nine Noble Virtues – Interconnected

Happy Odin’s Day!

The Nine Noble Virtues (NNV) each have their own purpose. The surprising thing is how much they overlap and often two or more virtues work in you t the same time. Discipline, Industriousness, and Self-Reliance often work together to bring prosperity into one’s life. Fidelity and Self-Reliance provide a balance between not being a burden to others while at the same time being a support to family and friends.

For me, there have been other aspects. I used to group the virtues by function in the past, and I no longer do that. The idea that some virtues are more in tune with love or justice or wisdom was something I thought until I realized that by living the nine virtues, all nine lead to being a person with these qualities. It’s a simple change, but in my meditations, I realize truth can be about love, justice, or wisdom. sometimes all three at once. I realized I was limiting what each virtue could do by such assumptions and categories.

This actually simplified things rather than complicated them. I now can meditate on the NNV without really keeping each one of them in a box. I don;t have to have a filter as to where they must go. Life meets virtue and what virtue might be the most helpful at that moment could be any one of them. It’s both freeing and simplified.

I find myself these days meditating on this interconnectedness far more than each virtue on its own. How do they twist into that cord or symbol that is the whole of being a virtuous person? It’s refreshing in some ways.

Yes, I Still Follow the Nine Noble Virtues

Happy Odin’s Day!

I still follow the Nine Noble Virtues (NNV). I feel that following a system or code of virtue is far more valuable than following a religion or spiritualism because the results are far more tangible. Real-world application to life is far more important to me than it used to be when I was religious. Application to every day is what matters. The NNV provide that, as they transcend religions and theoretical philosophies. Simply put, they work.

Every Virtue has a real-world expression. They also combine to provide different expressions. Industriousness needs courage at times to lead to success as one faces risk while working at something with a good attitude about work. Can anyone not see the connection between honor and truth? For me, by following the NNV I end up with a life that expresses itself with love, justice, and wisdom. Qualities that no decent person should fault anyone for.

I simply remind everyone who reads this blog that much of what it means to me to be The Grey Wayfarer is to follow this philosophy – the Nine Nobel Virtues. It is something that guides my decisions and thoughts and I will write on it fairly often.

Thanks for stopping by.

“Reconsidering Goals – Part 2” – A Skald’s Life – Business Virtues

Happy Thor’s Day!

Journal Entry:

I have achieved all my business goals this year so the issue now is much harder in that I need to raise the stakes here for business as I want to go further and farther. This is challenging for me as I need to improve this area of my life if I want to have some of the things I lost out on by being a minister.

Self-Reliance:

“Self-Reliance is the spirit of independence, which is achieved when each person is their own master and no one else’s’ .”

Principle: To walk in the spirit of independence by being my own master and no one else’s

Goal:  Find a new, better paying job by March 2020.

Bucket List: To be a published author of at least five books by March 2029

To launch my secondary career to writing seems to be the thing here.  I can’t go into too much detail until it happens but suffice it to say that my counselors and myself approve.  I just need to get past some initial hurdles

Industriousness:

“Industriousness is the willingness to work hard, always striving for efficiency, as a joyous activity in itself”

Principle: Work with the enjoyment of work itself.

Goal: Finalize last requirements for my degree – Internship by May 2019 – May 2019 (achieved)

Bucket List: Write A Novel and Get it Published by March 2022.

Writing goals here would be good.  Learning to be a disciplined writer should be here and it goes with the bucket list as well.

Hospitality:

“Hospitality is the willingness to share what one has with one’s fellows, especially when they are far from home.”

Principle: To share out of my abundance to help people where I can with their life’s journey.

Goal: By March 31st of 2020, to be the leader/participant in a group of some kind.  (Goal Achieved

Bucket List: To own my own home by March 2024.

I want this one to be about more fellowship with my fellow atheists and this means being involved more as an activist.  Not sure how to go about that, but I will have to put it into a goal of some kind.

Higher Virtue – Justice:

The most important person to be fair with is me.

Work Day Routine:

  1. Morning Routine

“Nine Principle Axes – Part 2” – A Skald’s Life – Business Virtues

Happy Thor’s Day!

Journal Entry:

My principles here have given me the most success so far. This year has seen me cross off all three of my goals in this area and it is very much about following my principles here.  Turning thought into actions has definitely happened here most of all.

These axes definitely struck true this year.

The White Knight, the lotto, the bailout are not coming so you better get up and move your own ass to make things happen.  To do this means walking in independence and being your own master – own no one, have no one owe you.

I enjoy working for its own sake and this has paid some dividends in life. Now the goal is to find work I enjoy as well.

Being compassionate to those in need is basic humanity.  Working hard and being independent is not just a goal for yourself but also should be a goal to teach others around you.

Higher Virtue – Justice:

Being fair mostly to myself these days is the main focus. it now what I want to do so now is the time to embrace it.

Work Day Routine:

  1. Morning Routine
  2. Wife: Communication / Cuddle Time

“Nine Shields – Part 2” – A Skald’s Life – Business Virtues

Happy Thor’s Day!

Journal Entry:

In the areas of protection of my life, the business virtues protect my prosperity more than any other thing.  Mainly, they don’t allow me to fall into the trap of think that someone else is responsible for my prosperity.  That belongs to me.  It is these virtues that allow me to take responsibility for myself and pursuing prosperity.

I am not looking to be rich by following these virtues I am simply seeking to be self-reliant, industrious and hospitable.  It is these virtues that lead to the prosperity I am looking for.

To be my own master and no one else’s’ requires vigilance.  Mostly it requires I watch who has control fo my time.  if it isn’t me, then there is a problem. Self- reliance means my time and money are spent as I see fit into according to someone else’s desires.

Working hard and being efficient are things I now value.  One allows me to build what I want and the other saves me time, the most precious commodity. Being efficient means more time and energy spent on other things and not getting bogged down on things that don’t matter as much to me and steal my time and resources.

Prosperity is not to be selfish and that requires the virtue of hospitality. It is ultimately this virtue that leads us to more prosperity as we work voluntarily together.

Higher Virtue – Justice:

True justice is found in living free and letting others do the same. You won’t find justice in controlling others only injustice and manipulation, Learning to let people be free is hard at times but it is the only true way to freedom for yourself.

Work Day Routine:

  1. Morning Routine
  2. Wife: Communication / Cuddle Time
  3. Reading – 1/7th of a book
  4. Blogging – Organize, revise, post for the next day.  Write a new post for two days out.
  5. Writing: 1000 words/day.
  6. Personal Business: record financial transactions, savings plan actions, budgeting, appointments, job search, other actions, etc.
  7. Check Communications and Email after 4 pm but before 6 pm.

I need to get better at these routines in general.  I know the Grey is present because I have the hardest time with these right now.

“Last Week of Open Discussion – Part 2” – A Skald’s Life – Business Virtues

Happy Thor’s Day!

Journal Entry:

Looking at my business area the real need is for a whole new set of goals. I really knocked it out of the park here and that means really looking into what I am going to do next month as far as where I want my next year to go. This is now building on past successes and that is good, but where I want things to go from here is a good starting point for goals.

Mostly I need a new career that fits me better.  management in business is Ok, but I prefer teaching and being an instructor. Also, my writing career needs to really start working – literally.  The habits of a writer are not just part of my foundational makeup but my business one as well. It may even branch into self as well as discipline is a part of it.

I need to know what my secondary support career is going to be and I think it lays in the area od being a teacher/professor so I think the first step is heading down that road. I don’t have problems with the virtue or principle here.  The issue is the goal needs to reflect this new career. The bucket list item already reflects my first career choice of being a writer so that is good.

Once again the virtue, principle and bucket list items are good.  The bucket list item definitely reflects the writer aspect of my life so the goal should reflect perhaps the other aspect of my life, that of being a teacher.

Hospitality:

“Hospitality is the willingness to share what one has with one’s fellows, especially when they are far from home.”

Principle: To share out of my abundance to help people where I can with their life’s journey.

GoalBy March 31st of 2020, to be the leader/participant in a group of some kind.  (Goal Achieved

Bucket List: To own my own home by March 2024.

Principle and virtue – good.  Bucket list reflects a time where I know I will have a place to call home that I have built. The goal here should reflect being a supporter of causes I believe in and like I said last week, I think being able to support the Clergy project regularly is a good goal.

Higher Virtue – Justice:

The main thing right now for all of this is being jsut and fair to myself.  That means doing something for the direction of my life and not feeling guilty about it if it makes me happy but might make others uncomfortable.

Work Day Routine:

  1. Morning Routine
  2. Wife: Communication / Cuddle Time
  3. Reading – 1/7th of a book
  4. Blogging – Organize, revise, post for the next day.  Write a new post for two days out.
  5. Writing: 1000 words/day.
  6. Personal Business: record financial transactions, savings plan actions, budgeting, appointments, job search, other actions, etc.
  7. Check Communications and Email after 4 pm but before 6 pm.

Once again routine is now a matter of discipline, not having a good routine to follow.
